Peter Monkman

Monkman is an award winning artist who came to prominence in the late 90s with his 'domestic  doodles' which tracked his everyday life in the form of fields of automatic drawing. Drawing has underpinned all work with an increasing focus on portraiture. Since winning the BP Portrait Award in 2009 with a depiction of his 12 year old daughter as ‘The Changeling’ Monkman has always been interested in how appearances can be captured revealing more complex notions of identity. More recent portraits  reveal  layers of automatic drawing which suggests processes such as  thoughts and memory deriving from sensation.

As an educator and  member of CBPP (Contemporary British Portrait Painters) Monkman enjoys collaborating with and entering into a supportive dialogue with artists and students. Monkman has judged a number of competitions including the BP Portrait Award in 2015 and the Sanlam Portrait Award in Cape Town, SA in 2016.

Half Danish, born in Gloucester and brought up in County Durham, Monkman has practiced and taught in Lancashire, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and currently lives and works in Surrey, UK.
